Islam
began in Arabia and was revealed to humanity by the Prophet
Muhammad. Muslims believe that there is only one God: Allah.
Islam is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion the word Islam
means "submission",
or the total surrender of oneself to God. Almost all Muslims
belong to one of two major denominations, the Sunni
and Shi'a. Shias adhere to the teachings of Islamic
prophet Muhammad but differ from Sunni in following the
religious guidance of his family or his descendants known
as Shi'a Imams, whom they consider to be infallible. The
Sunni dealt historically with the "book" as a
guide for action, or example of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad
(they represent the branch of Islam that accepted the caliphate
of Abu Bakr ).
God, in one place in the Qur'an commands Muhammad in the
following manner: "Say [to people], 'If you
love God, then follow me [the Prophet]; God will [then]
love you [people] and forgive your sins' " (Qur'an,
3:31). Hence not only do pious Muslims follow the
previously discussed "five
pillars of Islam":
:-Shahada
is the Islamic creed. The Shahada is the
Muslim declaration of belief in the oneness of God and acceptance
of Muhammad as his final prophet.English rendering:
"I testify that there is no god (ilah) but
God (Allah), and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger
of God."
