The
development of handedness preference has a hereditary basis;
if in a family there is a left
hander there will be a chance to be left-handed.
The environmental factors, temperamental differences play
a role in determining wheter latent left-handedness will
be cultivated or suppressed. Years ago children were prevented
from using their left-hand, now many children are allowed
to write with their chosen hand; this means that the left
handers want imitating their right handed friends. By the
time they reach the school, the writing will be slow and
untidy. If they tried to copy right-handers they may have
adopted a position known as “The hook” (they
write with the left arm curled round so that the hand is
above the writing and the pencil tilted with the point towards
the body). Using a pen is even more difficult and ink work
will inevitably be smudged. To write for a left hander is
more difficult. The first is that the left-to-right direcition
favors right-handers because it is easier to pull a pen
across a page that to push one. As a left handed moves across
a pen, it is often covering the letters it has just written.
The main solution is to have the right equipment: pens that
have quick drying ink, pencils, notebooks (that open left
to open) and binders. The proper position for writing consist
of 3 factors. The first is the position of the body: POSTURE.
The second id the position of the pencil in the hand, often
called the GRIP.The third is the position
of the paper, which is referred to as the slant or the tilt
of the paper. Ideally, he proper grip for left handers should
be a mirror image of the proper grip for right handers Theaching
left-handers write should be easy when they are young. Teaching
handwriting is one of the most important functions of our
schools.. A right hand prefernce may be easier to recognize,
because the right hand children use sometime their left;
a left handers use the right hands frequently. Sometime
to know if a child is left handed it’s enough to see
him to pick up a fork or spoon; or throw a ball with their
dominant hand, and beat a drum with their dominant hand.
Left handed children generally have as much ability to learn
as right handed children but they have to be prepared by
their parents at home or by theachers during the preschool.
