Red
tea – rooibos (redbush)
The needle shaped leaves from the shrub aspalathus Linearis
(roobios) have been used for centuries, traditionally as
a tea by South African tribes and Bushmen. Rooibos is cultivated
in the mountains of Capetown South Afica and has become
a favourite beverage of health conscious people across the
world. The growing interest in Red Tea and Red Tea extract
is due to its soothing, health giving nature and particularly
as a powerful anti-oxidant. Red tea has no caffeine, is
low Tannin, high in minerals and unique flavinoids with
free radical capturing properties.
In South Africa it is more common to drink rooibos with
milk and sugar, but elsewhere it is usually served without.
The flavor of rooibos tea is often described as being sweet
(without sugar added) and slightly nutty.
Several coffee shops in South Africa have recently begun
to sell red espresso, which is concentrated
rooibos served and presented in the style of ordinary espresso.
The
red tea is used in cosmetic for the anti-oxdant property.
