Roscoe
Tanner (born October 15, 1951) is a former professional
American male tennis player and World No. 4 in 1979.
Tanner is best remembered for his devastating left-handed
serve. On the court, Tanner enjoyed his finest
years in the middle and late 1970s. In 1976, he won titles
in Cincinnati, Columbus, San Francisco and Tokyo. In 1977,
he won the Australian
Open, defeating Guillermo Vilas in a straight-sets
final. We have to remember, in the 1979, the 5-set loss
to Björn Borg in Wimbledon finals. He won $1.7 million
in official prize money and probably more than that in appearance
fees and endorsements for brands such as Sergio Tacchini
sportswear, PDP rackets and Pony shoes. After he retired
in 1984, however, the rougher battles began. He had gone
through a bitter divorce with his first wife before he put
the racquet down. Following retirement, he married again;
this one ended acrimoniously in 2000 after 15 years (because
of a relationship with Connie Romano, that gave him a daughter).
After has suffered a number of failed business ventures,
including a Tanner Tennis Village in Atlanta and the Roscoe
Tanner Tennis Academy in St Lucia.
Now he's behind bars. He had been sentenced in November
2003 to 10 years probation for bouncing a $35,595 check
used to buy a 32-foot boat in 2000.
